Jay's father was an extremely tough person, and as a young man Jay felt incessant pressure to impress him, but this got to a point that Jay suffered from his father's idea of masculinity. However, long after the man's death, Jay breaks down in tears after remembering that he (Jay) didn't even cry at his father's funeral, despite the man's impact on his life, and is haunted by the feeling that everyone else who attended thought Jay didn't love his father - the straw that breaks the camel's back in this scene is when Jay tearfully wonders if his father ever knew Jay loved him ("Clean Out Your Junk Drawer").
